Closing the Wellness Divide
In medical school, Sylvia learned about diseases. At Canyon Ranch, she learned about wellness. Now she returns every year with her colleagues.
Sylvia never learned about exercise physiology in her medical training. Nor had she heard that bone-health risks for small, elderly white women might apply to her as well. With all the lifestyle medicine she was learning, she began organizing annual Canyon Ranch trips for groups of black female physicians.
For more than 20 years, Sylvia and her Desert Divas have been coming for the first-hand, integrative wellness experience and to discover how they can help their patients live healthy, longer lives. “If I can do it here in a week, I can take it home and do it,” says Sylvia.
