Q: Why should consumers change to clean beauty? What kind of results would they get if they did?
I think it can make a big difference, certainly, for people with really reactive skin.
While she doesn’t tell people what they should do, Godfrey-June personally chooses clean beauty. With all the pollutants in the air, water, and environment, she points out that we're exposed to irritants every day – so why invest in a luxury product that adds to that toxic load? Instead, Godfrey-June prefers products without potential irritants and filler ingredients, noting that those with reactive skin may really benefit from clean beauty.
Q: What’s in your bathroom? What are your favorites?
If you want your skin to look better – and you want it to look better enough that your friends are like, ‘what are you doing to your skin?’ – vitamin C.
When it comes to skincare, there's one product that Godfrey-June believes every routine should include: vitamin C in the mornings. She makes special mention of Goop’s vitamin C products, as well as True Botanicals’ powder-based Booster, both of which maintain potency for longer, instead of degrading quickly. Her other beauty favorites included Tower 28 concealer, Tower 28 mascara, FORAH sunscreen, everything Westman Atelier®, and Iris&Romeo Weekend Skin SPF 50.
Q: What should I be looking for that’s not clean?
When you look in the active box on the back of the sunscreen, if there’s anything other than titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, it’s not clean.
Navigating clean beauty can be overwhelming, but Godfrey-June offers some key guidelines. When selecting a sunscreen, she advises checking the active ingredients: only titanium dioxide and zinc oxide make the cut as clean. She also cautions against spray sunscreens – even the so-called clean ones – which can be harmful when inhaled. Another red flag? The word “fragrance” on an ingredient list — unless the brand discloses exactly what’s inside, it can hide potentially harmful ingredients.
Q: What do you recommend for the body? Any self-tanners?
There’s a woman we work with at Goop, Erica Chidi, who gave us the best advice ... just take a minute or two in the morning to be with yourself naked.
Beyond facial skincare, body care rituals are equally as important. Godfrey-June shares a self-care tip from Erica Chidi: taking a moment each morning to be with oneself while applying body oil or moisturizer. She also highlights dry brushing, a practice she initially dismissed until witnessing the transformative effects — both for her cat and herself! As far as self-tanners? Salty Face is her favorite for a sustainable, clean option.

Q: How do you feel about the number of products you should be using morning and night?
It’s super personal. It is what works for you and what makes your skin feel good.
When it comes to skincare routines, Godfrey-June says that it’s all about what makes you feel confident – and that might evolve over time. For example, she no longer washes her face every morning as, with age, her skin is less oily. Her personal routine consists of applying vitamin C in the morning, followed by a face oil or moisturizer like Weleda Skin Food, and finishing with sunscreen or Beautycounter Skin Dew. She recommends using retinol, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), or any kind of exfoliant at night.
Q: Any specific recommendations or considerations for men that are different than women?
Everybody should use vitamin C, male or female.
Men’s skin actually tends to be thicker – aging less quickly – but everyone still benefits from beauty products like vitamin C or Weleda Skin Food if you experience dryness. For men navigating post-shave irritation, Godfrey-June suggests soothing, lightweight products that absorb quickly, such as hyaluronic acid-based products. Another expert tip? Add powder-form vitamin C to any spots of irritation.
